LET YOURSELF REST

Rest is essential to staying healthy. Not just physically healthy, but emotionally and spiritually healthy as well. When you are not well rested, it becomes more difficult not only to perform the tasks necessary to your day-to-day life, but also to work on personal and relational growth. It becomes nearly impossible to check in with yourself, spend time on things that you love, or reach out to your friends, when you can barely keep your eyes open or get up from the couch at the end of the day. 


This means taking the time to ensure both that you get a good night’s sleep and that you get to relax and unwind when you need to. If you have felt tired lately, go to bed early. If you have been tense, treat yourself to a massage or read a good book before you go to bed. If you’ve been feeling burned out from work, take a mental health day. Give yourself permission to do what is needed for your own well-being, whatever that may be. 


You may have also pulled this card if you’ve been having a hard time sleeping or relaxing lately. Maybe you go to bed early, only to spend hours tossing and turning. Or you try to take a relaxing bath, but your mind won’t stop racing. This is a sign that you need to take the time to address whatever it is that is causing you stress. Work on mindfulness and meditation to quiet your mind, and, if possible, take action to resolve matters of stress or underlying issues.

Questions to ask yourself: What can I do to help my body rest? When was the last time I had a full night’s sleep? What is stopping me from relaxing?

​

Additional meanings: Feeling rundown. Give yourself permission to rest. Take a day off for self-care. Pay attention to your body’s needs. Visit a sleep specialist or doctor to check for sleep disorders. Reduce your caffeine intake. If you’re on an ADD medication, your dose might be too high or you could be taking your medication too late in the day.
